The continuous improvement manager drives continuous improvement initiatives to support the realization of a world class manufacturing environment within the Amsterdam Roasting Plant. They ensure management and maintenance of step-change improvement processes and systems in operations (capacity availability / utilization; customer service; quality; inventory reduction; cost reduction) through performance visibility and transfer of best practices across EMEA Manufacturing. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Key responsibilities

  • Develops and deploys a consistent set of operating philosophies and operating standards in the manufacturing team, ultimately leading to establishment of a benchmark site that represents the highest level of operational excellence in Starbucks;
  • Develops and implements an operational management system that provides visibility of key operational (service, quality, stock, cost) metric for EMEA manufacturing;
  • Identification and validation of current best practices in all areas of operations in order to determine EMEA manufacturing performance entitlement and set direction for improvement activities;
  • Supports each manufacturing function in developing site improvement plans. Acts as a thought leader, coach, and teacher regarding lean manufacturing and other continuous improvement methodologies;
  • Develops an active learning culture and operating system that delivers rapid transfer of best practice, leverages the resource available across Starbucks to drive and sustain operational excellence;
  • Works with QA, safety, engineering, planning and operations teams in ARP and global teams to ensure that there is an integrated support plan and set of Continuous improvement tools for the process operations team;
  • Prepares and maintains planning, alignment and calendar process. Provides quarterly recommendations for reprioritization to EMEA manufacturing management team. Leads establishment and maintenance of management of change process;
  • Works with global manufacturing functions to leverage best practices tools and standard operating procedures;
  • Prepares and executes operational related Root Cause Analysis;
  • When asked to lead a shift, acts as official company representative accountable for partners and assets in the ARP site during a shift. Responsible for adherence to all safety and security procedures, knows and follows emergency procedures for shutting down and restarting production safely, procedures in case of a fire or other emergency and communication procedures within and outside Starbucks.

Your Profile

The ideal continuous improvement manager we are looking for has gained 8-10 years supply chain / operations experience, including: fluency in planning systems, financial and operational models, manufacturing operations, and lean manufacturing.

Must haves

  • Experience in leading or facilitating lean implementations and other process improvements is essential;
  • Bachelor or Master degree in related field (Engineering, Physical Sciences or Finance);
  • Fluency in statistical process control techniques (SPC), quality tools, lean manufacturing principles, six-sigma, 5S and TPM;
  • Confident communicator and influencer (both verbally and written) with internal and external parties;
  • Able to deal with ambiguity and to work alone as well as part of a team;
  • Skilled and very experienced in managing “change programs” in manufacturing;
  • Highly developed leadership qualities.
